I thought I would add a comment I made on a discussion board for keep sake. Having an argument with a bunch of leftist "Christians" over gun control. Seem to be a lot of those now a days. They whole heartedly reject and refuse to even examine the idea that the 2nd Amendment to our constitution is based in Biblical principle. Here is an article I wrote on that subject. The Second Amendment. In arguing with one individual who claimed guns are causing murder rates to climb. I pointed out the radical drop in crime rates from the 60'-80's compared to now is due to two things. The first is rebellion of the populace against leftist polices that engender crime. That was manifested in things like truth in sentencing laws and 3 strikes your out coupled with nearly 40 years of revival in America. From the Jesus movement to the Charismatic movement to the Word of faith movement to the explosion of Christian media. He denied there was any cause but an aging population. (Population is growing not aging.)
I told him if leftists really cared about murder and other crime there are things they can do about it other than just crying for gun control. I used New York City's radical drop in crime rates as an example. Of course he is arguing had nothing to do with any policy changes. Which is what I wanted to post here for keep sake since it was some work. I listed Wikipedia numbers. NYC police dept. numbers and finally this. The FBI's numbers.

Mayor Dinkins came into office at the same time crime rates spiked. Not
his fault obviously. 1990. He got permission from the state for a
special tax and expanded the police dept. by almost 25% . So I was
giving him credit to where credit was due. He did something to stop the 30
year out of control crime rate surge in NYC. Which by the way is my
contention in this discussion. That NYC found a way to curb crime by
actually fighting it. Something that seems to be anathema to leftists.
Even to this day with all the police hatred going on.
So the numbers here are crimes per capita, 100,000. You can see
Dinkins crime rate drop from its height in 1990 to 1993. Looking at his
four years the over all violent crime dropped approx. 13%. Less than
that if you want to start at the end of the previous year but we will
just give him those few extra percent. 14% for murder, 10% for rape.
Now counting the rate at the end of Dinkins last year which if we did
for Dinkins, since it rose so precipitously by the end of his first year
would make the percentage of drop less. For all violent crime for the
first term of Giuliani a 40% drop. Murder a 50% drop. Rape 25%.
Giuliani's 2nd term? All violent crime- a further 33% drop from the last
year of his fist term. Murder, a whopping 60% drop in the second term
measuring from the last year of his first term. Rape a further 25%.
So as to my contention that the type of governess you practice can in
fact reduce crime and the reason I made that contention was. Leftist if
they really cared could do something that worked instead of crying about
gun control. I used NYC as an example that did something and yet kept
its strict gun control laws.......but as I noted and you seem to be
verifying. Leftist don't want better policing but just more gun control.
You can't argue with the math. Dinkins, I think a Democrat not sure,
after his first year saw the crime numbers reach its historic high. Then
hired 25% more officers and got those crime numbers down about 15%. Then
Giuliani a former prosecutor building on those extra officers and an
actual heart to really do something about crime owned it.
