Confederate Statues and the Democratic Party. When did Southern States turn Republican?8/27/2017 |
What is going on out there with the push to remove historical monuments? Republicans who's basic ideology has never changed historically had nothing to do with the erection of confederate monuments. Why do they seem to be taking the rap for the continued existence of those monuments that Democrats erected? The answers are really not that complex. Lets look at some modern history from the time of the passage of the civil rights legislation in the 1960's.Note* None of these statements include the Republican governors and legislators during the time period that Confederates were not allowed to vote immediately following the Civil WarThe first Republican governor of Georgia was elected in 2002 and the state has had a Republican governor since then. From the 1960-1990 Republicans controlled only approx. 15% of Georgia's congress! From 1990 they slowly made gains until in 2004 they gained control of both houses of congress and have remained in control since then. The question then must be asked. Since the Democrat's were in complete control of the state of Georgia for almost four decades since civil rights legislation. All the way up until 2002. Since Democrats were calling Republicans racists and white supremacist decades before 2002. Why didn't the Democrats take down the Confederate monuments in the state of Georgia when they were in total control of the state of Georgia? Is President Jimmy Carter a closet Racist? When he was governor of Georgia there were 28 Republicans in Georgia's house and Senate and 223 Democrats. It has to be assumed the answer to that question is that Jimmy Carter was or is not a closet racist. Then why didn't they remove the confederate monuments? The vast majority of Confederate monuments were installed in the early part of the 19th century. Most have been installed by southerners in an attempt to rewrite the history of the Civil War as anything other than about slavery. Or as part of the justification for Jim Crow laws. Georgia's Democrats that undoubtedly included many African Americans that had controlled the state up until 2002 knew all this history. Why didn't they act when they had all the power in the world to remove monuments installed by racists to promote white supremacy? Since these modern Democrats are not racists. There then has to be simple answer.
When Bill & Hillary Clinton first became governor and first lady of Arkansas in 1979. There were 129 Democrats in Arkansas' congress and 6 Republicans! When they left 10 years later there were 122 Democrats and 13 Republicans. After the Civil War era Arkansas had Republican governors: 1967-1971, 1981-1982, 1996-2006, 2015- present. Republicans did not take control of the Arkansas congress until 2013. Up until the mid 1990's the Republican party had 13% or less of the house and Senate seats in Arkansas. That is so few that as far as passing laws are concerned. It didn't matter if there was a Republican or Democrat governor. For all those decades Democrats, that included African American Democrats could have passed any law they wanted. They had the numbers to easily override any governors veto. Are Bill and Hillary Clinton racists? For arguments sake lets assume they are not. Didn't Hillary Clinton repeatedly accuse Donald Trump of racism during their presidential campaigns? Why then, long after Civil rights legislation was passed and when Democrats had complete control of the state of Arkansas did they not remove the symbols of white supremacy from the state? Since it's not because modern Democrats are racists. Then what is it?
South Carolina got its first Republican governor since the Civil war reconstruction era in 1975-1978. When he was elected South Carolina's congress had 151 Democrats and 24 Republicans. They have only had 12 years worth of Democrat governors since then. Republicans did not take the SC's house of representatives until 1995 and the senate until the year 2000. They have been in power since. Up until the election in 1994 the Democrats had super majorities in SC's congress and could have passed any law they wanted even if there was a Republican governor. One thing for sure. The raw numbers in these states show what an absolute history revisionist lie many Democrats have accepted that the racist southern Democrats became Republicans after the civil rights act. RACSIST SOUTHERN DEMOCRATS WERE ALL DEAD BY THE TIME REPUBLICANS TOOK OVER THE SOUTH!!!! This is besides the fact that 10's of millions of Republicans have migrated to the south from the north since civil rights legislation was passed. (Was not safe to be a Republicans in the south up until then.)North Carolina, basically the same story. 4 Republican governors since reconstruction. Super majorities of Democrats in NC's the house and senate until the mid 1990's. Democrats could pass any law they wanted regardless of the party of the governor up until that point. The senate in NC was not taken over by Republicans for the first time in 130 years until 2011! The house switched hands a few times since the mid 90's.These states have the same lopsided history of complete and total control by Democrats up to the mid nineties or beyond.Mississippi: Republican governors since reconstruction 3. First time GOP controlled the states congress 2012.Louisiana: Republican governors since reconstruction 4. First time GOP controlled the states congress 2011.Alabama: Republican governors since reconstruction 4. First time GOP controlled the states congress 2011.Texas: Republican governors since reconstruction 4. First time GOP controlled the states congress 2003.Tennessee: Republican governors since reconstruction 4. First time GOP controlled the states congress 2009.Florida: Republican governors since reconstruction 5. First time GOP controlled the states congress 2000.Virginia: Republican governors since reconstruction 9. First time GOP controlled the states congress 1998.
So to answer the big question of why Democrats who forsook the racism of their parties past did not remove the racist, white supremacist, KKK, neo-confederate, southern revisionist history symbols of their parties past? Very simple. There was nothing to gain politically in the removal of culturally sensitive monuments UNTIL THE GOP TOOK OVER SOUTHERN STATES AN AVERAGE OF A DECADE AGO! This brings us to the conundrum. How did these monuments installed as part of a concerted history revisionism of Democratic parties past become culturally sensitive to the nation as a whole? Culturally sensitive to many present day Democrats and Republicans? How did symbols installed mostly during the era of the racist polices of Woodrow Wilson become something of "historical value" to many if not most in the Republican party that has always hated racism? Plus many, but perhaps not most in Democratic party who forsook their past racism? The main reason may surprise you. Hollywood movies. Our nation has been fed a steady diet of Hollywood movies that have romanticized the Civil War for a hundred years. I am not even claiming this was done for nefarious purposes. Hollywood is, or at least was in the business of selling entertainment. The hard realties of this nations past and what led to that war is not entertainment. Especially if you are a Democrat. There must be a thousand movies; some watched by every man woman and child in this nation. From the silent move era like The General to a dozen John Wayne movies were he played a romanticized character's from the union and the confederacy. So when you are talking tearing these statues down you are talking tearing down something that Americans love. Something they have intense feelings about. Not the actual history which most know little about but the romanticized version which they have been brought up on since they were babies. Again, even if their was an effort to revise history by some Hollywood movie makers. I am not accusing them of this nor am I saying it was totally wrong. An argument could be made that this is part of the nations healing. To forget past wrongs and animosities and live as one people again. Problem is, we are not seeing any effort to live as one people under the American ideal. Which leads me to the next reason. We can now see the full fledged effort to so radically alter the realities of our nations history to somehow tag the Republican party with Democratic parties history. How is this even possible? Very simply. The Democrat party has been in control of the government run schools for almost two generations now. I have talk to hundreds of Democrats and leftists. You would be surprised that a majority of them actually have no idea of their parties history. If someone tells them the KKK was a Republican organization they actually believe it. They have been so miss-educated that when you bring up the harsh reality of history to them it's not even believable. Not exactly the kind of folks to do any at their fingertips research on their own either. To busy watching TMZ on social media. But lets take this one step further. How many Republicans or Democrats know the racist history of progressive President Woodrow Wilson? That he fired or segregated African Americans in federal government's workforce that had been an haven of employment for them since the Civil War. How many know he had hundreds of thousands of quasi federal badge carrying jack booted KKK type's working under the justice department to enforce his policies called the American Protective League? That he was the first president, an academic, who thought the constitution was outdated. Who thought to order American citizens along the lines of the military? The only reason we don't is because it is purposely not taught in schools because of Woodrow Wilson's party affiliation. I am just using this as an example to show how effective the Democratic party has been in re-writing history in government run schools to hide their past indiscretions. The third thing is the outright history revision by southern Democrats that is somewhat embraced by the Democrat party itself so that slavery can become "America's sin" rather than theirs. This propaganda claims the war was for other reasons than slavery. This century long propaganda effort has been very effective. It is surprising how many good people unwittingly have accepted it. Not wanting to get into this very much. A quick reading of some of the southern states articles of secession aught to cure any brainwashed minds as to why southern states said they are seceding.Where to go from here regarding confederate monuments? Without setting history right first, nowhere. If an accurate understating of history can be ascertained by a majority of the public then perhaps we can have a legitimate discussion on what to do. One thing is clear though. Those screaming loudest about their removal are communist groups who consider our form of government and our constitution fascist. When they call themselves anti fascists it's a ruse to get well meaning ignoramuses to join them. Their aim by their own words and documents is the violent over throw of our form of government by force of arms. These groups that are closely allied with many movers and shakers in todays Democratic party have no place at the table in our nation. They are as abhorrent as NAZI's or any white supremacist group and must not be allowed to to have any voice in the future of this nation. It is still illegal to organize for the violent overthrow of our government. It is high time the Democratic party and Democrat run media fully and without any reservations denounce them. There is no excuse in calling for the violent overthrow of our nation and the destruction its history. In exactly the same way NAZI's cannot be allowed any say the Communists must be relegated to the dust bin of history.By the way. I am a radical Republican and look upon confederate statues with animosity. I would just as soon they disappear leaving only those that have a truly historical and educational purpose. But that is just me. As I said someone who has no respect for all the good the USA has brought to the world and wants it to be destroyed should be driven from the societies table. |
